What made the synth so popular is that it featured some of the greatest presets of all time, and it can be heard on countless pop hits and film and TV soundtracks of the 80s and 90s.ĭexed is an open-source DX7 clone plug-in, and although its interface is still a little on the menacing side, it’s a vast improvement over that of the original hardware. The instrument only had a two-line LCD alphanumeric display, and while using a liquid-crystal display might sound impossibly futuristic and glamorous, its extremely limited capacity to display information would have made the DX7 a lot more time-consuming to program than modern FM softsynths. That said, programming patches on the quintessential hardware FM synth, 1983’s Yamaha DX7, would have been a slog. Maybe 2010s! ha.Frequency modulation synthesis has something of a reputation for being complicated and difficult to master, and while FM synths can definitely be intimidating, they’re really quite straightforward once you’ve got your head around the basics. I also made a brahm with the OPS7 and several effects. my Digitone sure isn't making piano ballads, the the OPS7 can do a lot more in terms of sound sculpting and variation. The DX7 screams 80s by default, and a lot of patches do, too.

But, yes, FM is more scary (it is for me!) than subtractive. I've been able to create a lush, analog sounding FM pad on my own, and, though many of the free DX7 presets are totally 80s (tm), some work really well, and they can be tweaked, layered and detuned to be more. The DX7 was basically recreated by Plogue down to firmware version differences - I'd bet it sounds as good or better than any sampled DX7, though, of course, it's not pre-processed. To me, the sound quality of OPS7 is easily as good as Massive X, Repro, TAL J8, etc.

If you want a DX7 but not have the hardware around, OPS7 is where it's at. If you want a synth that "sounds a lot like the DX7", those others will do.
